Senators were in a streak when nothing went well, but they look relatively good right now, with their star players healthy. The Senators have already clinched their playoff spot and it is mostly because of their great play on home ice in Canada. Players like Alfredsson and Jason Spezza have came back from long lasting injuries and the defensive talent from Sweden, Erik Karlsson, has shown great skills. Erik Karlsson has impressed me and many other fans this season and it is great to see that a offensive talented Swedish defenseman got a breakthrough in such a physical league as the NHL, and he has developed into a great pointer in power play for example. The Tampa Bay Lightning is second last in the Eastern Conference and they haven’t been that good this season, but it is mostly on the road. They have been decent on home ice, and they are playing like an average NHL team there, but the games outside Flordia have caused their place in the standings. Now when they are playing an (almost) just as bad road team will they probably do pretty well. They should be able to take at least one point in this game, so I would bet on the Lightning or a tie, since I believe it will be a close game. Maybe overtime or a shootout to expect. The Carolina Hurricanes began the season as we all know very badly, but they have improved substantially since Christmas and they seem to end up not far from the playoff teams. They don’t have a bad team and now when they’ve got some luck have the points come, from top teams as well. The Eastern Conference has been even this season, especially in the bottom, but the Hurricanes have climbed up to a twelfth place, and that should satisfy most of the players. A more consistent season this fall, and the Hurricanes should reach the playoffs in one year. The Montreal Canadiens started off kind of shaky, but they are now on safe territory in the top of the Eastern Conference. They will have to play the Pittsburgh Penguins or the New Jersey Devils in the first round of the playoffs and their season should end with that. But the Canadiens have shown their skills before, so nothing is impossible. Away against the Carolina Hurricanes now, and I believe they will lose, just like the last game they played. The Buffalo Sabres are in the division lead right now and they have been impressive this year, with a hot Ryan Miller as biggest reason to their success. But it is also because of little-known players like Tim Connolly, Derek Roy and Jason Pominville have been really good and put up some points on the scoreboard. The three players are point leaders in the team and they have proved for the league that they are good enough for the top in the NHL. The team contains a good mix and if Miller can keep the high level will it be a fun playoff for the Sabres. The Bruins have had a tougher season, and they are now located right above the Philadelphia Flyers, on a seventh place in the Eastern Conference. They seem to have secured their playoff spot but they have always been on the edge throughout the season, with teams like the New York Rangers and the Atlanta Thrashers hunting them. The biggest problem has been Tim Thomas in the net, who got a great contract after the last season. He has gotten worse and worse after his success last year, and OK performances have been mixed with pure crap. Tuukka Rask feels like a good contender and successor, but Thomas will cost a lot of money in the future. Bad decision by the management… This is a very hard game to predict and I would believe it could end in many different ways. Miller uses to keep the scoring down, so a game with a few goals can be possible, but it depends on how good the Bruins goalie plays. The Sabres have a small advantage but the Bruins have done well against the Sabres before. They are at home now and they could use some extra points before the playoffs to keep the Flyers and the Rangers on a distance. Close game to expect. 3-2 to the Bruins? The Islanders have a decent streak, but the Penguins are motivated to take over the first place in their division. The New Jersey Devils and the Pittsburgh Penguins have the same amount of points now, with just a few games left of the ordinary season. The team who wins the division will play an easier team in the first round of the playoffs, which is something to aim at. It would probably be the Philadelphia Flyers, the Boston bruins or the New York Rangers for example, and those teams are better to play than the Ottawa Senators who the second team in the division probably would play. The Penguins will try to win every game and pass the Devils. The Islanders have won a couple of games recently and their young talents show that the franchise has a great future ahead of them. But they are not good enough to compete with the better teams this season, and players like Okposo and Tavares are not two players who can carry their team through an entire season. They will have to think more about the team’s future, because they won’t win in this game. The Penguins will go in hard and win the game easily on home ice. Fleury won’t let in many goals, if he is the netminder for the game, but I suppose Brent Johnson will start the game, and that would make the teams more equal.
